Southern Culture On The Skids Comes To Hatteras Island

Formed in Chapel Hill, NC in 1983,  “the bards of downward mobility” have played their unique hybrid of Americana, surf, R&B, rockabilly and swamp pop sound (self described as “toe sucking geek rock – kinda weird, but it feels good when you’re doing it”), while delighting fans into ecstatic, sweat-drenched paroxysms of joy. Assisted by their cohorts in chaos, drummer Dave Hartman and bassist/singer/heartbreaker Mary Huff Miller remain prolific and ubiquitous for over twenty years.

June Events on Hatteras Island

Jun 2, Full moon climb

Grab your flashlight and experience a lighthouse at night by joining the National Park Service on a Full Moon Climb at the Cape Hatteras. Hear stories of keepers of old, view the working light close up in the lantern room, and catch the reflection off the Atlantic Ocean of the newly-risen full moon as you stand on the lighthouse balcony.

Two tours will be given at each lighthouse — one at 8:30 p.m. and a second at 9:30 p.m (Times are subject to change. Please check with NPS for tour times). Tickets are required.

Tickets for the Full Moon Climbs must be purchased in advance and are non-refundable. Ticket sales at the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse from 8:15 a.m. to 4:40 p.m. daily. You must purchase your ticket at the site where you wish to climb. The number of tickets for each tour is limited. Tickets are $8 per adult, and $4 for children (11 and under) and seniors (62 and older).

Children joining the climb must be at least 42 inches tall and must climb the steps on their own—they cannot be carried. Also, keep in mind that some youngsters may not enjoy the dimly lit, sometimes claustrophobic environment. Children 11 years of age and younger must be accompanied by an adult (16 or older).

Prior to purchasing tickets, consider your own limitations and those of your group. The lighthouse is tall, dark, often hot and humid, and can be a challenge to climb. There is no air conditioning or internal lights. www.nps.gov/caha
